Iodine

Deficiencies of iodine can result in enlargement of the thyroid gland or can develop into a goiter.   In children it results in impaired development, mental and physical conditions.

Iodine plays an important role in regulating the body's production of energy, promotes growth and development and stimulates the rte of metabolism helping the body burn excess fat.  Mental process, speech and the condition of hair, nails, skin and teeth are dependent on a well-functioning thyroid gland.

Iodine is readily absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract and is transported by way of the bloodstream to the thyroid gland.  About 30% of iodide in the blood is absorbed by the thyroid gland the rest is absorbed by the kidneys or excreted as waste.
