Endothelial dysfunction
Inside of the heart and blood vessel is a thin membrane called the endothelium The endothelial cells release substances that control vascular relaxation and contraction as well as enzymes that control blood clotting, immune function and platelet adhesion.
Endothelial dysfunction has been shown to predict stroke and heart attacks because the arteries are unable to fully dilate. This dysfunction may be a result of high blood pressure, diabetes or high cholesterol.
Endothelial dysfunction is normally a precursor to atherosclerosis, (hardening of the arterial walls).
